Table of Contents in chronological order


One of the truly irking things about Blogger is that it has no facility for switching between reverse chronological and chronological order.  (The default is reverse.)  Sadly, too, there is no easy way to advance from one post to the other.  I love the ease with which I can post, but abhor the user interface.

As this is a "closed" blog--that is, now that the vacay is over, we will not be updating it anymore--I've placed a table of contents in chrono order for those of you who would like to read the posts in a successive, linear way.

      After a relatively uneventful American Airlines flight to London, we were confronted with one of the worst transfer and security clusterfucks we've ever experienced. Getting from terminal 3 to terminal 5 required several vigorous sprints to suddenly intransigent massive queues. Busses weren't running directly from the terminal as advertised. So we walked, I swear, over a mile just to get to the stupid busses. Very little signage, and a lot of dumb guesses. The only upside was a chance conversation in the terminal bus with a geriatric red-nosed man who chatted me up because I was wearing my "Slava Ukraini" shirt. Turns out he's an ethnic Hungarian who fought in the '56 uprising and went into exile in the US, where he's lived (in California and Oregon) since that time. When he mentioned he was going to visit Debrecen, I responded in Hungarian "Debrecenben voltam. Tanultam magyarul." He was blown away. So then I got my history nerd on, and we ended

      Thursday, June 30: Cave men, Medieval castles, and Parking in 19th-century courtyards

      We set out today for the countryside around Zagreb with three destinations in mind. Our first stop was in Samobor, just to the west of Zagreb.  This suburb (actually more of rural weekend getaway spot for Zagrebians) has a castle listed in Google Maps I wanted to visit, but once we got there, we realized it was a substantial hike to the top whose path we couldn't find.  We made our way along a lovely stream with herons playing in the water that led to a kids public swimming pool and camp, stumbling upon a cute chapel from the 15th century. Samobor is also home to "the best Cremeschnitte in Croatia" (according to Sarah Ćosić of Royal Croatian Tours), but we decided to head out again rather than stop in the town square hunting for a cafe.  (Word to the wise: if you can stop and chill a couple times during a trip, do so.  We ended up "hangry" by the time we finished our excursion that day.)
